SolidWorks PDF Export Add-In Prototype

A minimal C# SolidWorks add-in that exposes a command to save the active drawing as PDF.

MY FOCUSStructured the add-in lifecycle, command routing, registration hooks, build metadata, and export service.

ENGINEERING VALUE

Provides a clean transition path from embedded VBA toward maintainable external CAD automation.

ENGINEERING STUDY / DRAWINGJS—02

Engineering concept illustration.

01 / THE PROBLEM

The engineering challenge.

VBA-only workflows are difficult to version, review, and scale into maintainable tooling.

02 / CONSTRAINTS

What the solution must consider.

  • The trial intentionally omits production logging, settings UI, toolbar assets, batch export, and revision-aware naming.

03 / ENGINEERING APPROACH

Reasoning before geometry.

01

Engineering method

Keep lifecycle code small and isolate export logic so the project can grow using ordinary source control and refactoring.

02

Workflow features

ISwAddin connection and cleanup; Drawing-only command enablement; Saved-drawing folder or Desktop output path; Separated PDF export service; Export success and file-existence checks.

04 / DESIGN & IMPLEMENTATION

Connecting intent to execution.

The prototype separates ISwAddin lifecycle and command routing from a PDF-export service that checks drawing context and output-file existence.

  • ISwAddin connection and cleanup
  • Drawing-only command enablement
  • Saved-drawing folder or Desktop output path
  • Separated PDF export service
  • Export success and file-existence checks

05 / VALIDATION

The checks behind the design.

Prototype

The source examples are not a complete installable add-in. Deployment requires build metadata, project files, COM registration and testing inside SolidWorks.

06 / OUTCOME

The value of the work.

Provides a clean transition path from embedded VBA toward maintainable external CAD automation.

THE ENGINEERING PRINCIPLE

Automate the workflow, including its failure cases.

Reliable engineering automation needs input checks, predictable output, clear diagnostics and a way to verify that quantities and references were preserved. Saving clicks alone is not sufficient evidence of correctness.

A question for a technical conversation

What would you test when the input is incomplete, duplicated or outside the tool’s supported scope?
